Air conditioning style coils can be used to construct an efficient and flexible air to air heat exchange system, called a "run-around" energy recovery loop.
Large coils operating at low face velocities are placed in both the exhaust and fresh air streams. They are coupled with a small capacity pump, expansion vessel and insulated pipework to construct a fluid coupled heat exchange system capable of efficiencies of more than 80% sensible recovery. Latent heat recovery is also possible in some applications.
It is also possible to enhance the dehumidification capability of cooling coils buy using these systems to pre cool and the reheat the air stream before and after the main cooling coil.
